What are they going to think about me?
The truth might hurt here, but the answer is probably not much. Your shadow is the only thing that is really watching what you’re doing on a regular basis.
It’s not that we shouldn’t pay attention to how we show up in the world. The issue is we often get too hung up on the things other people don’t actually notice. Sure, we’ve all seen politicians put a dent in their image by tripping or having a stray hair blowing around during a speech that we just can’t stop watching. But on the whole most people don’t pay all that much attention to you past a quick glance.
So, you’re saying I just shouldn’t care?
So go set a good example for others and put your best foot forward. But in the scheme of it all, maybe take yourself a little less seriously. Zip up your fly, make sure you look presentable, and take a deep breath as the rest of the world isn’t watching as much as you think they are.
How do I do that?
It starts with figuring out what is important to you, and then ensuring you are putting those values first. Surrounding yourself with people who accept you even when you fumble will help. And cut yourself some slack! Take a step back and catch yourself when you’re being judgmental about yourself as well as others.
